These 5 Chrome extensions are my digital productivity workhorses! I couldn't get through as much as I can in a day without them.
It’s possible that you might not know what a Chrome Extension is.
Browsers, whether it be Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc has a store where you can install extensions – some paid, most free.
These extensions enhance your browser experience in various ways depending on the extension.
When you install an extension, a new icon appears in the address bar right next to where you type in a URL or search term.
Not sure where to go to find them? Just google “chrome extension store” and you can navigate to the store and spend hours and hours exploring the plethora of options available to you.
But if you don't a lifetime to waste scrolling? Here are my fave five that I use daily specifically for productivity.
Chrome Extension #1: OneTab
Ok let’s see a show of hands….
How many of you have “Must Keep This Tab Open” syndrome resulting in a gluttony of open tabs on your browser?
Yup, you know the FOMO of closing a tab you “might need later”, the sheer horror when Chrome decides to shut down and not restore all 50+ tabs, and the inner knowing that you might be a little crazy.
Enter OneTab – my little piece of sanity in the browser world.
With OneTab I can add all my open tabs into one tab (aka OneTab) for quick access later.
I can lock some tab sets, delete a tab if I don’t need it, label groups of tabs and more.
It’s like a well-organized sticky note pad for browser tabs.
Perhaps most importantly, it spares your computer from the heavy resources required to keep all those tabs open and in your computer’s memory.
Which means your machine runs quickly and smoothly again… (the joys of a nerd).
Here’s how it works…
Whenever you find yourself with too many tabs, you simply have to click on the OneTab icon to convert all of your tabs into a list.
To access the tabs again, right-click the OneTab icon. You can restore them individually or all at once.
When your tabs are in the OneTab list, you will save up to 95% of memory which allows for a faster Chrome experience.
Chrome Extension #2: FireShot
It doesn’t shoot fireballs but it does take snapshots of your screen 😊 with some extra finesse.
I often need to grab screenshots of a web page, sometimes I need the whole page, other times just a section.
When it comes to capturing the entire page, most screenshot apps only capture the visible part of your screen. FireShot captures the full page, automatically scrolling down as it captures it.
You can also choose to select a piece that you define by dragging a marquee around the area.
Once captured, you can choose to save it as an image, PDF, send to email, copy to clipboard for pasting or even print it out.
There is a premium version of FireShot which allows you to capture, annotate, print and save better, edit, upload, send to email / OneNote, or export to another program.
But I find the free version works for my needs.
If you’re still using PrintScreen + Paint for your screenshots, you need FireShot.
Chrome Extension #3: Video Speed Controller
Have you ever felt the intense annoyance of watching a reply video on Facebook where you first have to sit through 10 minutes of “small talk while we wait for people to join”?
Or when someone is sharing GEMS but they speak soooo slooowly that you have time to bake a lasagna during one sentence?
Urgh it drives me nuts! [Imagine nut emoji here]
So, when I discovered this little chrome extension, my world lit up with another time- and sanity- saver.
Video Speed Controller allows you to change the playback speed of videos anywhere on the web.
Now that long intro or person who speaks too slowly, can be sped up or even skipped in increments!
Some sites like Facebook and Twitter don’t allow you to change the speed of your videos within their platform.
But this little devil, Video Speed Controller, gets passed all that fan-dangle and puts the control back into your hands.
With Video Speed Controller you can speed up, slow down, advance and rewind any HTML5 video with quick shortcuts.
Yes, I know, you’re welcome 😊
Facebook Ads Starter Kit
Watch this training before you ‘Boost’ another post 😜
A 3-part training (only 35 mins) to help you create better ads on Facebook.
Chrome Extension #4: Loom
What would I do without Looooooom?
If you were able to show someone something that would take 40 minutes to type in a 3-minute video instead, wouldn’t you kiss the ground in thanks?
I use Loom on the daily. It saves me hours of time.
With Loom, you can create videos of your screen, even webcam yourself, on the fly and then share it instantly with just a link.
This is efficiency at its best!
You don’t need to process, or host videos. Just click, record, stop recording, copy link and send.
You’re also notified when someone views your video……. Superbly helpful when you want to make sure someone has watched the video.
Here's a quick showcase video I did a while back, hence the very short hair and old office.
Chrome Extension #5: 1Password
Time to fess up? Are you someone who uses the same password for all your accounts? You know “BabyLove123#”?
You know it’s bad but you haven’t been hacked… yet.
Cyber-crime is only getting worse and once they hack “BabyLove123#” they will get in to all your accounts.
Now, you don’t want to use the “save password” or “create password” feature your browser or phone offers. Those still leave you vulnerable.
What you need is 1Password!
I’ve been using it now for 5 years and it has changed my online experience along with a healthy dose of “I’m safe and secure and take that you cyber criminals”.
Just as the name suggests, you only need to remember one password that secures your VAULT of crazy amazing passwords for various sites, apps, logins, accounts and more.It can sign you into accounts on the fly (big time-saver), generate passwords, and store other sensitive information.
When you need to create a new login on a web page, 1Password will generate a new password for you and store your login in your vault for later use.
When it comes to security, 1Password is as secure as it gets.
Here’s an extract from their site on the matter:
“Your 1Password data is kept safe by AES-GCM-256 authenticated encryption. The data you entrust to 1Password is effectively impossible to decrypt. Secure random numbers. Encryption keys, initialization vectors, and nonces are all generated using cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generators.”
I’ll leave all that technical shpangle for you to decipher, for me I like the line... “1Password is effectively impossible to decrypt”.
I have the paid subscription because frankly it’s critical for anyone who is ‘plugged in’.
That's it! Over to you.
Give these a try and let me know what you think of them.
If you have a Chrome extension that you love, please share it with us in the comments below.
Cheers to working smarter, faster, happier and without a nappy-rash 😊
